Cut to Order Sod Delivery in Los Lunas, NM
There’s a difference between sod that’s been sitting on a pallet at the back of a garden center for five days and sod that was in the ground yesterday morning. If you’ve ever installed the first kind, you already know. The outer rolls look sun-baked. The inner rolls might be fine but you won’t know until you unroll them. And the whole project becomes a gamble on whether the grass will establish before it gives up.
Sod Shop runs a different model. We cut to order. Your sod is harvested specifically for your scheduled delivery date — not stacked on a pallet hoping someone buys it before it dies.
How Cut-to-Order Works for Los Lunas Customers
The process is straightforward. You place an order online, pick your delivery date at checkout, and pay in advance. The day before your delivery, we harvest exactly the amount you ordered. Early the next morning, our driver loads your sod and heads out on the Los Lunas route.
About 25 miles south of ABQ. Los Lunas is included in our standard morning delivery window. Sod that left the field at 4 AM is on your property before the afternoon heat hits. That’s a real difference for establishment success, especially in our high-desert climate where fresh sod and day-old sod behave very differently under the first watering.

What We Grow (and Why It Works in Los Lunas)
Los Lunas sits at 4,869 feet in USDA zone 7a to 7b. The climate here is slightly warmer than ABQ proper due to lower elevation, with full monsoon exposure. That specific combination rules out most warm-season grasses you’ll see advertised in big-box stores — they simply won’t thrive at this elevation. Our two products are chosen specifically for the Albuquerque-Santa Fe corridor.
Siempre Verde Tall Fescue
A cool-season tall fescue blend bred for drought tolerance, year-round green color, and durability. Siempre Verde stays green through Los Lunas’s winter rather than going dormant brown the way warm-season grasses do. It handles kids, dogs, and foot traffic, and its root system runs deeper than Kentucky bluegrass for better heat tolerance. Mowing height: 1 to 3 inches. Works in full sun or moderate shade.
Sandia Bluegrass Blend
Our premium Kentucky bluegrass blend, named for the mountain range east of Albuquerque. Gives you the classic dense, manicured lawn look with excellent self-repair from stolons. Goes dormant in winter but bounces back vigorously in spring. Mowing height: 0.5 to 2 inches. Best in full sun with dependable irrigation.
Why Cut-to-Order Matters More at Altitude
New Mexico’s high-desert climate is tougher on sod than most of the country. Our UV hits harder. Our humidity sits low. And our monsoon rains come in short violent bursts that a new install has to weather while roots are still establishing. Starting with the freshest possible sod — with healthy, green roots ready to knit into your soil — is the single biggest factor in whether your install succeeds or turns into a regrade project in August.
Sod that’s been on a pallet in a garden center parking lot for a week loses root vigor every day it sits. In our climate, that matters more than people think.
Los Lunas and the South Valley Advantage
Los Lunas sits lower than Albuquerque — about 450 feet lower — and that elevation difference shows up in spring. Your soil warms up earlier than ABQ, which means you can typically install sod a couple weeks earlier in the spring here than in the Northeast Heights. That’s a practical advantage if you’re planning a March or early April install.
The flip side: Los Lunas summers run a few degrees hotter than ABQ proper. July and August installs here are hard on new sod. If you have the flexibility, spring and fall installs go much more smoothly. Huning Ranch and Morris Meadows subdivisions make up a lot of our Los Lunas deliveries — the newer construction means relatively fresh soil without as many legacy issues as older ABQ neighborhoods.
